US actor George 'Goober Pyle' Lindsey Dies at 83

Monday, May 7, 2012

George Lindsey, who found fame as petrol station attendant Goober Pyle on US sitcom the Andy Griffith show, has died at the age of 83.

The Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home in Nashville said Lindsey had died on Sunday following a brief illness.

Lindsey played Goober on the Andy Griffith Show from 1964 to 1968.

He went on to play the same character in Hee Haw from 1971 until it ended in 1993. His other TV credits included Mash and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.

"America has grown up with me," Lindsey said in an interview with the Associated Press in 1985.

"Goober is every man, everyone finds something to like about ol' Goober," he added.

In a statement released by the funeral home, Griffith said: "George Lindsey was my friend. I had great respect for his talent and his human spirit."

Lindsey also appeared in several movies, including Cannonball Run II.

And he lent his voice to animation films such as Robin Hood, The Rescuers and The Aristocats.

Lindsey began his professional acting career on Broadway in the musicals Wonderful Town and All American.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.

Earth Got Warned Becoz of dinosaurs Gases

Giant dinosaurs could have warmed the planet with their flatulence, say researchers.

British scientists have calculated the methane output of sauropods, including the species known as Brontosaurus.

By scaling up the digestive wind of cows, they estimate that the population of dinosaurs - as a whole - produced 520 million tonnes of gas annually.

They suggest the gas could have been a key factor in the warm climate 150 million years ago.

David Wilkinson from Liverpool John Moore's University, and colleagues from the University of London and the University of Glasgow published their results in the journal Current Biology.

Sauropods, such as Apatosaurus louise (formerly known as Brontosaurus), were super-sized land animals that grazed on vegetation during the Mesozoic Era.

For Dr Wilkinson, it was not the giants that were of interest but the microscopic organisms living inside them.

"The ecology of microbes and their role in the working of our planet are one of my key interests in science," he told BBC Nature.

"Although it's the dinosaur element that captures the popular imagination with this work, actually it is the microbes living in the dinosaurs guts that are making the methane."

Methane is known as a "greenhouse gas" that absorbs infrared radiation from the sun, trapping it in the Earth's atmosphere and leading to increased temperatures.

Previous studies have suggested that the Earth was up to 10C (18F) warmer in the Mesozoic Era.

With the knowledge that livestock emissions currently contribute a significant part to global methane levels, the researchers used existing data to estimate how sauropods could have affected the climate.

Their calculations considered the dinosaurs' estimated total population and used a scale that links biomass to methane output for cattle.

"Cows today produce something like 50-100 [million tonnes] per year. Our best estimate for Sauropods is around 520 [million tonnes]," said Dr Wilkinson.

Current methane emissions amount to around 500 million tonnes a year from a combination of natural sources, such as wild animals, and human activities including dairy and meat production.

Expressing his surprise at the comparative figures, Dr Wilkinson added that dinosaurs were not the sole producers of methane at the time.

"There were other sources of methane in the Mesozoic so total methane level would probably have been much higher than now," he said.

Third Point had set a Monday deadline for Thompson

A shareholder seeking the dismissal of Yahoo's chief executive has demanded the search firm allow access to documents relating to his recruitment.

In January, Yahoo named Scott Thompson, the president of online payments firm Paypal, as its new head.

But investment firm Third Point discovered that Mr Thompson did not hold a degree in computer science as had been claimed.

Third Point had set a Monday deadline for Yahoo to fire Thompson.

Mr Thompson graduated from Stonehill College and was said by Yahoo to hold a degree in accounting and computer science - though the college did not offer the latter subject at the time.

Yahoo has acknowledged the "inadvertent error" and has said it will conduct a review.

But after the Monday deadline passed without incident, Third Point demanded that Yahoo hand over documents and records related to Mr Thompson's recruitment.

"Third Point believes that Yahoo shareholders and employees will be best served if the board accepts responsibility quickly for this latest debacle," it said.

It wants to "investigate wrongdoing or possible mismanagement" by Mr Thompson and the board over the issue.

Three men fallen from Thailand's tallest building & Died

Three men have fallen to their deaths from Thailand's tallest building when a cable supporting the platform they were standing on to install advertising broke, police have said.

Two other workers were left clinging to the structure suspended high above Bangkok's streets in the accident at the Baiyoke Tower on Monday afternoon.

The pair were rescued from the 68th storey of the 89-storey building.

The platform tilted sharply when the cable snapped, officials say.

"Three men fell to their deaths... while another two were rescued from the 68th storey - probably one floor lower than where they had been working," police spokesman Thamarak Reungdit told the AFP news agency.

He said that the two survivors suffered minor injuries and were being treated in hospital.

"A forensic team will investigate how it happened and whether or not the platform was overloaded," Mr Reungdit said.

Correspondents say that the 304m (997ft) Baiyoke Tower is a distinctive feature of the Thai capital's skyline and contains a hotel on its uppermost floors.

Kolkatta Knocks The Table Topers Delhi

Kolkata Knight Riders cantered to a six-wicket win over Delhi Daredevils at the Ferozeshah Kotla here Monday, and went to the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) table.

Jacques Kallis' (2-20) brilliant spell of bowling helped Kolkata restrict Delhi to 153 for nine.

The visitors then egged on by Brendon McCullum's 56 off 44 balls achieved the target losing four wickets and with eight balls to spare.

Skipper Gautam Gambhir (36) and South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis (30) made valuable contributions as Knight Riders registered their sixth consecutive win in the league. Kallis, who picked up two for 20, was also adjudged as Man of the Match for his all-round performance.

The Knight Riders have 17 points, having played one game more than the Daredevils, who are on 16 points from 11 matches.

Gambhir got his team to another flyer smashing five fours on his way to 36 off just 21 balls. His opening partner Brendon McCullum gave him ample support as the Knight Riders reached 60 at the end of the powerplay.

Umesh Yadav dropped Gambhir at third-man but luckily for him, Varun Aaron castled him the very next ball.

Kolkata were coasting at 128 for one at the end of 15 overs but pacer Yadav gave the hosts an inkling of hope removing Kallis (30) and McCullum of successive balls. Yusuf Pathan (7) and Debabrata Das (1) held on to their nerves taking Kolkata across the line

Earlier, Daredevils electing to bat made a good start, courtesy skipper Virender Sehwag (21) and David Warner (23). After Brett Lee bowled a maiden in the first over, the next two overs yielded 34 runs.

The joy though was short-lived as Kallis (2-20) gave Delhi a body blow, trapping Sehwag in front of the stumps. The Delhi dasher's dream run in the tournament came to an end after scoring five consecutive fifties. Though he won himself the orange cap, overtaking Rajasthan Royals' Ajinkya Rahane.

Warner, playing his first match in the fifth edition, didn't stay too long either as he fell victim to Kallis' bouncer.

Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene (30) looked in good touch and forged a 46-run stand with New Zealand's Ross Taylor. Keeper McCullum gave him a reprieve when he was on eight but Mahela failed to cash in as Gambhir ran him out.

Taylor's abysmal run in this year's tournament continued, as he scooped an easy catch to long off, giving medium-pacer Pradeep Sangwan his first scalp in the tournament. The New Zealand captain looked totally out of sorts, scoring 16 off 27 balls.

All-rounder Irfan Pathan played a cameo down the order hitting 36 off 22 balls, which included a six and four fours. Pathan's late surge propelled Delhi to a fighting total.

West Indian Sunil Narine again bowled an economical spell picking two for 23 from his four overs.
