Three men have fallen to their deaths from Thailand's tallest building when a cable supporting the platform they were standing on to install advertising broke, police have said.

Two other workers were left clinging to the structure suspended high above Bangkok's streets in the accident at the Baiyoke Tower on Monday afternoon.

The pair were rescued from the 68th storey of the 89-storey building.

The platform tilted sharply when the cable snapped, officials say.

"Three men fell to their deaths... while another two were rescued from the 68th storey - probably one floor lower than where they had been working," police spokesman Thamarak Reungdit told the AFP news agency.

He said that the two survivors suffered minor injuries and were being treated in hospital.

"A forensic team will investigate how it happened and whether or not the platform was overloaded," Mr Reungdit said.

Correspondents say that the 304m (997ft) Baiyoke Tower is a distinctive feature of the Thai capital's skyline and contains a hotel on its uppermost floors.
