Third Point had set a Monday deadline for Thompson

Monday, May 7, 2012

A shareholder seeking the dismissal of Yahoo's chief executive has demanded the search firm allow access to documents relating to his recruitment.

In January, Yahoo named Scott Thompson, the president of online payments firm Paypal, as its new head.

But investment firm Third Point discovered that Mr Thompson did not hold a degree in computer science as had been claimed.

Third Point had set a Monday deadline for Yahoo to fire Thompson.

Mr Thompson graduated from Stonehill College and was said by Yahoo to hold a degree in accounting and computer science - though the college did not offer the latter subject at the time.

Yahoo has acknowledged the "inadvertent error" and has said it will conduct a review.

But after the Monday deadline passed without incident, Third Point demanded that Yahoo hand over documents and records related to Mr Thompson's recruitment.

"Third Point believes that Yahoo shareholders and employees will be best served if the board accepts responsibility quickly for this latest debacle," it said.

It wants to "investigate wrongdoing or possible mismanagement" by Mr Thompson and the board over the issue.

Three men fallen from Thailand's tallest building & Died

Three men have fallen to their deaths from Thailand's tallest building when a cable supporting the platform they were standing on to install advertising broke, police have said.

Two other workers were left clinging to the structure suspended high above Bangkok's streets in the accident at the Baiyoke Tower on Monday afternoon.

The pair were rescued from the 68th storey of the 89-storey building.

The platform tilted sharply when the cable snapped, officials say.

"Three men fell to their deaths... while another two were rescued from the 68th storey - probably one floor lower than where they had been working," police spokesman Thamarak Reungdit told the AFP news agency.

He said that the two survivors suffered minor injuries and were being treated in hospital.

"A forensic team will investigate how it happened and whether or not the platform was overloaded," Mr Reungdit said.

Correspondents say that the 304m (997ft) Baiyoke Tower is a distinctive feature of the Thai capital's skyline and contains a hotel on its uppermost floors.

California Engineers Tested artificial earthquakes at 'hospital'

Sunday, May 6, 2012

Engineers in California have unleashed high-intensity artificial earthquakes on a five-storey building packed with medical equipment.

The mock hospital has been built on a giant "shake table" which can subject the building to movements similar to real earthquakes.

The tests are designed to determine if hospitals built on rubber bearings could function after a quake.

The use of these rubber bearings is common in earthquake-prone Japan.

The $5m (£3.1m) project also tested whether the bearings could protect other strategically important buildings, such as computer data centres, so they could operate without interruption after a large earthquake.

It is the first time that the bearing system has been tested under a full-scale building on a shake table in the United States.

"What the bearings do is uncouple the building from the motion of the ground during an earthquake, like putting the building on roller skates," said Tara Hutchinson, an engineering professor at the University of California, San Diego.

She said that while most research concentrated on the structural integrity of buildings after an earthquake, very little examined how vital contents such as stairs, lifts and other parts of a building that allowed it to fulfil its function fared after a major seismic event.

India Developed own missile defence shield : DRDO

India has developed its own missile defence shield which can be put in place at short notice to protect at least two cities, bringing the country at par with an elite group of few nations. The shield, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has been tested successfully and an incoming ballistic missile with the range of up to 2,000 kms can be destroyed.

"The Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) shield is now mature. We are ready to put phase one in place and it can be put in very short time," DRDO chief V K Saraswat told PTI in an interview.

He said the shield, as part of phase one of the programme, can be put in place in two cities in the country, where the infrastructure is available. However, the two places have not yet been identified and the selection will be made at the political level. The DRDO used variants of Prithvi missiles as simulated targets and successfully intercepted missiles in test-firings.

The system was first test-fired in November 2006 elevating India into the elite club of countries to have successfully developed an Anti-ballistic missile system, after United States, Russia and Israel.

"We have carried out six successful launches and demonstrated the capability for 2,000 km targets. We have demonstrated it in two layers that is endo-atmospheric (inside the Earth's atmosphere) and exo-atmospheric (outside the Earth's atmosphere)," Mr Saraswat said.

The DRDO chief said the Indian missile defence system is comparable with the US Patriot 3 system, which was successfully used during the 1990 Gulf War against Iraq.

He said all the elements such as long-range radars and tracking devices, real-time datalink and mission control system required for the missile system have been "realised" successfully.

Under the phase two of the project, the premier defence research agency would upgrade the system to handle ballistic missiles with range of 5,000 km. This phase is expected to be ready by 2016.

The system required for phase-II of the project is being developed, he said, adding that for this purpose, ships are being built from where the target missiles would be launched.

Talking about the advancement of the system, he said the missile defence shield has been "automated" to an extent where human intervention would be required only if the mission has to be aborted.

As part of its efforts to protect itself from enemy missiles, India is developing this two-tier BMD which can intercept enemy missiles at altitudes of 80 km and 150 km.

The DRDO is thinking of intercepting the missiles at higher altitudes as it would give it more response time in case the first attempt is a miss and the second layer of the system can be put into action.

19 injured in Firozpur Punjab Mail derailed at Rohtak

Saturday, May 5, 2012

At least 19 passengers were injured when eight coaches of the Delhi-bound Firozpur-Mumbai Punjab Mail derailed near Kharawar village, about 14 km from here, in the wee hours today.

Alok Mittal, the IGP of the Rohtak Range, informed the incident took place around 3:30 AM.

Out of the 24 coaches, the eight bogies that derailed include sleeper coaches from S-5 to S-10, apart from the guard-cum-luggage van.

Railway authorities have started an investigation to ascertain the reason behind the derailment.

The injured have been admitted to the PGIMS hospital here.Senior officers of Railways and police rushed to the spot and took the injured to the PGIMS hospital.

"Someone onboard the train had made a call to police control room. We promptly reached the spot and helped railway officials in rescue operation," said Mittal, adding that railway officials took nearly two hours to clear the track.

The train, then, proceeded towards its destination around 6 AM.Rohtak Railway authorities said around 300 m of railway track has been damaged, but no casualties or major injuries have been reported.

"The Railways Minister himself spoke to the locomotive driver as well as hospital authorities in the morning. He also spoke to the Divisional Railway Manager. The Railways will bear the cost of treatment," they said.

Fire at Drug Center Peru killed 14 people

A fire at a drug rehabilitation centre in the Peruvian capital Lima has killed 14 people - the second such tragedy there this year.

The blaze broke out at the Sacred Heart of Jesus centre in Chosica in eastern Lima in the early hours of the morning.

Firefighters said patients could not escape because the doors were locked and the windows barred.

In January a fire at another drug and alcohol clinic in Lima killed 29 people who were also locked inside.

Fire chief Fernando Campos said firefighters had to use tools to break into the two-storey building.

"The doors were locked and the windows on the second floor had bars on them. It wasn't possible for people to get out," he said.

At least one person managed to escape despite suffering burns.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.

The fire in January at the unlicensed Christ is Love clinic in Lima - where 29 people died - prompted calls for for better regulation of rehabilitation centres.

Often run by church groups, unlicensed clinics have sprung up to make up for a shortage of official facilities to help an estimated 100,000 addicts in need of treatment across Peru.

Some are said to lock patients inside to stop them leaving after they are brought in by relatives desperate to free them of their addictions.

Peru's Health Ministry has been working on new regulations for rehabilitation clinics.

Japan is switching off its last working nuclear reactor

Japan is switching off its last working nuclear reactor, as part of the safety drive since the March 2011 tsunami triggered a meltdown at the Fukushima plant.

The third reactor at the Tomari plant, in Hokkaido prefecture, is shutting down for routine maintenance.

It leaves Japan without energy from atomic power for the first time for more than 40 years.

Until last year, Japan got 30% of its power from nuclear energy.

Hundreds of people marched through Tokyo, waving banners to celebrate what they hope will be the end of nuclear power in Japan.

9yrs Old Girl Opened 2012 Olympics Stadium

A nine-year-old girl has officially opened the the 2012 Olympics stadium, at a ceremony in east London.

Niamh Clarke-Willis joined Locog head Lord Coe to hit a button which launched balloons into the sky above the venue for this summer's Games.

Around 40,000 members of the public were at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford to witness the opening, which included a laser light show.

The "2,012 hours to go" event tested the park's management and security.

Lord Coe said: "It's a fantastic feeling. The seven years have just flown by. Tonight is only the start of the story.

"We want thousands of young people to be inspired to take up sport. We hope that for a few of them it will be the start of their journey.

"I'm grateful to everyone who came here tonight to celebrate this moment in history."

Spectators had to queue to enter the venue after airport-style security checks.

20People Killed in Cairo on Rally Against EMD

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

At least 20 people have been killed in Cairo in an attack on a protest near the Egyptian Ministry of Defence. The unknown attackers used rocks, clubs, firebombs and shotguns. The protesters retaliated, beating some assailants.

Soldiers and police have now intervened to stop the clashes, but as long as six hours after the violence started. Two leading presidential candidates have suspended campaigning in protest at the way authorities handled it.

Abdul Moneim Aboul Fotouh, an independent Islamist, and Mohammed Mursi, head of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), criticised the authorities' response.

In addition, the FJP and the Salafist Nour party, which together control 70% of the seats in parliament, decided to boycott a meeting with the ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces (Scaf).

'Massacre'

Many of the protesters who were attacked outside the defence ministry building, in the capital's Abbasiya district, on Wednesday morning were supporters of a Salafist preacher barred from standing in the election.

Hazem Abu Ismail was disqualified because his mother had dual Egyptian-US nationality, violating rules laid out in a constitutional declaration approved after an uprising forced President Hosni Mubarak to step down.

Mr Abu Ismail complained that he was the victim of a "plot" by the military authorities, but the election commission found no evidence.

Ahmed Raafat was at the demonstration with friends and witnessed the attacks which he described to the BBC as a "massacre".

"I saw several people with head injuries and two people died in front of me. There was a lot of blood everywhere.

"The thugs who carried out the attacks were on foot and had their faces covered... [They used] live bullets, molotov cocktails, bricks and tear gas," he said.

The health ministry said more than 150 people were injured on Wednesday and that many were receiving treatment at a nearby field clinic.

Some had gunshot wounds and others had been attacked with knives, according to medical sources.

Six Killed in Kabul Attacks Today Taliban claims responsibility

Tuesday, May 1, 2012

May 2 2012 Kabul : The Afghan Taliban has claimed responsibility for a car bomb attack in eastern Kabul on Wednesday which police said targeted a housing compound for westerners in the city. Meanwhile the Afghan government has said that six people have been killed in the attack.

“One of our mujahideen detonated his car in front of a military base. Other mujahideen are inside the base fighting. There are very heavy casualties for the enemy,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters in a phone call.

U.S. President Barack Obama left Kabul only hours before the attacks after signing a strategic agreement with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Police chief Ayub Salangi told Reuters a car bomb exploded on Jalalabad road, the main road out of the capital heading east, where several US military bases and compounds housing Westerners are located.

Another police official said the explosion was followed by an exchange of gunfire. Afghan media said heavy casualties were feared.

A US embassy warning system urged staff to stay away from windows and take cover. The embassy is in the main diplomatic area in the centre of the city.

The blasts ironically came in the wake of comments by President Obama that peace in Afghanistan was around the corner.

On a swift, secretive trip to the war zone, President Barack Obama said, “Our goal is to destroy al Qaeda, and we are on a path to do exactly that,” Obama said in an unusual speech to America broadcast from an air base halfway around the world.

Samsung Locks The No 1 Position by Knocks Nokia

Monday, April 30, 2012

Samsung Electronics has overtaken Nokia to become the world's largest maker of mobile phones, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.

Nokia took the top spot in 1998 from Motorola, but in the first quarter of 2012 Samsung shipped 93m phones compared to almost 83m by Nokia.
Samsung also reported its highest quarterly profit since 2008.
Net profit was 5.05tn won ($4.5bn; £2.8bn) in the quarter ending 31 March, up 81% from 2.78tn won last year.
Samsung is also the world's biggest TV and flat screen maker.
"We cautiously expect our earnings momentum to continue going forward, as competitiveness in our major businesses is enhanced," said Robert Yi, head of investor relations at Samsung.
The firm said its IT and mobile communications division, which manufactures the smartphones, made an operating profit of 4.27tn won during the period, as revenues in the division surged 86% from a year earlier.
Samsung will unveil the latest version of its Galaxy range of phones on 3 May.
The Galaxy range has been very popular and helped Samsung overtake Apple to become the world's biggest seller of smartphones.
"The smartphone market has almost only two players, Samsung and Apple," said Lee Sei-Cheol of Meritz Securities.
"Since its Galaxy3 phone is being unveiled in May, Samsung will keep enjoying sales growth in its mobile phone division."

Samsung Record Its Profits Of $5.15 Billion In This Qutar

Friday, April 27, 2012

Samsung Electronics of South Korea posted a record $5.15 billion quarterly profit and predicted that its Galaxy smartphones, which outsell Apple’s iPhone and will be upgraded in the coming week, would bulk up earnings in the current quarter.

Samsung and Apple have carved out a near duopoly in the high-end smartphone market, as rivals have struggled to introduce compelling models that can really compete. The two controlled 90 percent of the market last year and that is not expected to change much this year or next, according to analysts at Bernstein.

The third generation of the flagship Galaxy S is to be unveiled in London in the coming week. The new Galaxy will be powered by Samsung’s quad-core microprocessor, which the company hopes to see used in handsets sold by Nokia, HTC and Motorola, as well as Apple, its biggest customer for components.

“We anticipate very strong demand for Galaxy S III,” Robert Yi, Samsung’s senior vice president and head of investor relations, told analysts. “When there’s strong demand in the market, we don’t necessarily need to spend a lot of marketing dollars to promote sales.”

Samsung’s quarterly handset division profits nearly tripled to 4.27 trillion won, or $3.8 billion, accounting for 73 percent of total profit. Operating margins jumped to 18.4 percent, from 12 percent in the preceding quarter, on strong sales of the Galaxy S and the Note phone/tablet, the surprise consumer hit of recent months.

Brian Park, an analyst at Tong Yang Securities, said Samsung’s handset momentum would continue this quarter with the new Galaxy S coming to market before the next iPhone. “The Galaxy S III’s specifications are expected to be sensational, and it’s already drawing strong interest from the market and consumers.”

In a sign that smartphones are where the mobile action is, Foxconn International Holdings, which assembles basic handsets for Motorola, Sony and others, warned of a deepening first-half loss on weak orders. Its Taiwanese parent, Foxconn Technology Group, assembles iPads and iPhones, and Foxconn itself swung to a profit last year as other clients like Nokia and Huawei Technologies shifted to higher-end smartphones.

Samsung, the world’s top technology firm by revenue, has overtaken Nokia, the longtime global cellphone leader, and is outmuscling Japanese rivals in televisions and memory chips. Its January-March operating profit nearly doubled, to 5.85 trillion won, in line with the company’s guidance, and was up from 5.3 trillion won in the previous quarter.

Samsung sold 93.5 million handsets from January to March — more than one in every four sold around the world, according to Strategy Analytics. That helped the Korean company overtake Nokia, which sold 82.7 million phones and had a 22.5 percent market share. Apple had a market share of 9.5 percent.

“Samsung’s smartphone success in the first quarter was the flip side of Nokia’s disappointment,” Matt Evans, an analyst at CLSA, said in a recent report.

Mr. Park of Tong Yang said Samsung’s handset earnings growth might slow this year, with the likely introduction of the iPhone 5 by Apple, “but the recovery of chips and displays will more than offset potential drops, sustaining earnings momentum.”

Samsung competes with Sony and LG Electronics in televisions, with Toshiba and SK Hynix in chips and with LG Display in flat-screens.

Profits from semiconductor sales more than halved to 760 billion won, hit by tumbling computer memory chip prices, while the television and home appliance business increased profits sharply to 530 billion won from a razor-thin 80 billion won a year ago.

Samsung and its homegrown rival, LG Electronics, are among the few global television manufacturers making money and winning market share, helped by sleek designs, crisp displays and new technologies, like 3-D and organic LED sets. Its Japanese competitors, Sony, Panasonic and Sharp, expect to have lost a combined $21 billion in the business year that just ended.
